The Kusama Parachain auction of Polkadot's advance network is about to begin, and Polkadot's ecology will also usher in an outbreak. To this end, the vernacular blockchain has joined hands with many excellent Polkadot projects to gather the vernacular masters to say that there is an online AMA every day to discuss the story behind Polkadot and its future direction.

Middle: Host | Vernacular Blockchain Sanli
At 10 o clock yesterday morning, Patract CMO Santry and Helena, head of Parity Asia s business and operations, were invited as interview guests to participate in the Parity & Patract special session of the vernacular blockchain "Polka Grand Cafe Phase I". The main points of the interview are as follows:
"Parity's mission is to help Polkadot build a rich, diverse, healthy and prosperous ecosystem.
We are considering building a comprehensive and effective funnel to select high-quality projects through layered selection and cultivation. In this way, a systematic overall strategy can select and push out these ecological projects. "
Helena, Head of Business and Operations, Parity Asia
"In smart contracts, EVM contracts and Wasm contracts are currently at the forefront. Since the establishment of the project, Patract has always chosen to open up wasteland in the field of Wasm and explore further technological evolution.
Wasm virtual machine structure, instruction completeness and execution efficiency are far better than Ethereum EVM virtual machine. This means that more different business needs of the project party can be achieved, such as in DeFi, which can achieve low costs and solve the problem of congestion.
At present, not only Polkadot, but some of the competitive public chains Solana, Dfinity and PlatON in recent years, they have all chosen Wasm as the new underlying engine. "
Patract CMO Santry Huang
The following is the original interview:
1. Project introduction
Vernacular Blockchain Sanli: Welcome Helena and Santry as guests of the vernacular masters. First of all, please give us a brief introduction and talk about the roles of Parity and Patract in the Polkadot ecosystem, right?
ParityHelena: Hello everyone, I m Helena, the head of business and operations for Parity Asia Pacific. I have worked in product and business for ten years, mainly in financial technology and payment. I used to work in the US offices of Visa, PayPal and Alipay.
At the same time, I also have some investment experience in entrepreneurial projects. Since 2016, he has been paying attention to and researching the blockchain, and joined Parity full-time at the end of 2019. Currently in Parity, he is responsible for ecosystem development, business cooperation and strategic operations in the Asian market.
As the developer and creator of Polkadot, our official mission is to support and develop ecological projects based on Polkadot, Kusama and Substrate, and serve and empower project parties in the ecosystem.
PatractSantry: Hello, everyone. I am the CMO Santry of Patract. Patract is a provider of technical solutions for the Parachain and DApp developers of the Polkadot Wasm contract ecosystem. We help the community parachain design and develop on-chain contract modules and runtime support, and provide DApp developers with full-stack Wasm contract tools and service support.
We are a member of Polkadot and Kusama councils. We have successfully initiated and passed 13 proposals to the Treasury, deploying verification nodes on Polkadot and Kusama, and are also members of the Substrate Builder Program.
Vernacular Blockchain Sanli: Parity Technologies, which was established in 2015, was initially positioned to build the fastest and most secure open source software for Ethereum and distributed networks. After 2018, focus more on building the infrastructure of Web 3.0 and put the Web back in the hands of users. There seems to be some adjustment in this intermediate direction. What are the considerations for this adjustment?
ParityHelena: The current focus of Parity is to develop and write the Polkadot network and Substrate, an open source component that can easily write the blockchain. The adjustment in this direction is so obvious that it is actually the true embodiment and specific implementation of Gavin's grand vision of Web3.0.
I will explain here a little bit about the differences between Polkadot, Parity and the Web3 Foundation's several concepts:
Polkadot is a blockchain network and a technical product, which is developed and maintained by the technology company Parity. Parity has made great efforts in the Asia-Pacific market last year. I believe that the friends who pay attention to Polkadot and the Polkadot community can feel it. The Web3 Foundation is a legal entity parallel to Parity, which empowers the Polkadot network in terms of legal compliance and Grant review and issuance. Vernacular Blockchain Sanli: Do Parity and the Foundation have any strategies and specific activities for the development and growth of the Polkadot ecology in the Asia-Pacific market?
ParityHelena: Our entire market strategy is basically to consider building a comprehensive and effective funnel. From these people who have a basic knowledge of Polkadot and blockchain, we will select a group of people who are willing to learn Polkadot and Substrate in depth. Enter the second level, and then select developers who have the development ability and earnestly learn Substrate from these deep cognitions, and then select better teams and projects from this group of people, and pass them through hackathons and workshops. Transported to a higher training camp.
In this way, through layers of screening and training, high-quality projects are selected, helping them to become the candidate projects and top projects of the Polkadot Parachain. The number of developers, the activity of developers, the amount of developer code contributions, and the number and quality of ecological projects are the most true and intuitive indicators that effectively reflect the progress and value of a public chain project. It is also our Polkadot The effective indicators and long-term indicators that fans should pay attention to are indicators that penetrate the surface and see the essence.
3.Patract: Wasm technology stack
Vernacular Blockchain Sanli: Title written on the official website of Patract Labs: Patract s mission is to accelerate the transformation of the smart contract industry to the Wasm technology stack. Although the Wasm technology is immature, why would such excellent projects as Acala, Litentry, Plasm, Phala, Bifrost, consider integrating Wasm contracts or deploying Wasm contracts? Please give us a brief introduction to the Wasm technology stack and what advantages does it have?
PatractSantry: Among smart contracts, EVM contracts and Wasm contracts are currently at the forefront. Since the establishment of the project, Patract has always chosen to open up wasteland in the field of Wasm and explore further technological evolution. We are convinced that Wasm contracts will be the technical trend of smart contracts in the future.
As we all know, the historical burden of Ethereum is a bit heavy. Due to the limitations of the Solidity language, it is impossible to develop high-complexity contracts at low cost; secondly, based on the middle layer characteristics of the EVM virtual machine and adopting Gas billing to prevent excessive consumption of computing resources The rules lead to high exchange costs and low efficiency of contract code execution.
Wasm is a product jointly developed by super manufacturers such as Google, Microsoft, and Apple for many years. It is a portable bytecode format, small in size, and a sandboxed execution environment. From the advantages of Wasm itself, Wasm virtual machine structure, instruction completeness and execution efficiency are far better than Ethereum EVM virtual machine.
In terms of execution efficiency, Wasm contracts can be executed at a speed closer to machine code, which is one to two orders of magnitude higher than the performance of EVM. In terms of exchange fees: As Polkadot adopts the NPoS mechanism, shared security and faster Wasm virtual machine, the exchange throughput is greatly increased, and the contract deployment and exchange costs can also be greatly reduced, which means that more project parties can be realized. Business needs.
At present, not only Polkadot, but some of the competitive public chains Solana, Dfinity and PlatON in recent years, they all choose Wasm as the new underlying engine. Wasm is also very expandable and can meet different chain models and contract languages, and innovative The iteration space is huge.
Vernacular Blockchain Sanli: In mid-May, Patract Open Platform, initiated by Patract Labs, and dozens of Polkadot ecological projects jointly established an open Polkadot Wasm contract technology alliance. Why would you consider launching such an alliance?
Patract Santry: We very much hope that Wasm contracts can be popularized on the blockchain on a large scale, so we build alliances to bring together all project parties that support or are using Wasm contract integration or deployment, and discuss ecological Discuss solutions for public technical issues.
We also hope to collect community opinions and feedback, and propose to Parity to improve the resource model, economic model, and optimize the experience of using contract language and development tools. At present, Polkadot has not yet formed its own contract standard, and the current business is directly built with the Ethereum ERC standard, so we need the power of the community to promote it together.
At present, there are more and more projects supporting Wasm in the Polkadot community. In the future, we will continue to absorb Polkadot projects that have integrated or deployed Wasm contract parachains and DApp applications, including media communities, to promote the construction of public infrastructure and Wasm The evolution of contract technology has truly created a powerful Wasm contract ecological alliance.
4. Progress of Parachain Slot Auctions
Vernacular Blockchain Sanli: Polkadot ecological card slot auction is coming soon. Is there any progress on the Parachain slot launching Parity?
Parity Helena: This morning we just announced the upgrade of Kusama to Statemine, which means that the first parachain is online. You can take a look at this chart:
1) After passing the test on the testnet, the code of the parachain will be deployed to Kusama to start the auction first, and then to Polkadot for auction. The card slot durations on Kusama and Polkadot are slightly different, but the rules are basically the same. I will use Kusama as an explanation here.
2) Based on the principle of starting from nothing, from light to heavy. In the first step, we will deploy the shell chain to the testnet. The shell chain has no specific functions. In the second step, at the same time we deploy parachain registration, auction, crowdfunding and other functions to Kusuama. The third step is to wait for the shell chain to run stably on the testnet, and we deploy the shell chain to Kusama. In the fourth step, all stability is upgraded to the public welfare chain Statemine through on-chain governance. The fifth step, if the Statemine public welfare company runs stably without errors, we will announce the start of commercial parachain auctions.
3) At present, the progress that everyone is most concerned about should be the progress of repairing technical problems that occurred after May 17. I believe that everyone should have seen Gavin's latest tweet yesterday. We have fixed the problem and continue to the fourth step after the system is stable.
In these creations and realizations of unprecedented technological innovation, slow is fast, and steady and continuous progress is more valuable than hurried arrival. We stand in the present to look at the development of the blockchain. We are now in a very early and very chaotic state. This will be a long and wide development path. So the moment of time is almost negligible in retrospect in the years to come.
Vernacular Blockchain Sanli: It is understood that the successful parachain of the slot auction can build its own business ecology through the security of the relay chain, so it needs the help of contract tools. Please give you a brief introduction in this part?
Patract Santry: We look forward to the arrival of the Kusama slot auction. Kusama has great reference and adjustment significance for Polkadot, and it also lays a solid foundation for Polkadot's stable development. For Polkadot, the landing of the parachain is only a key node in the development.
Once the parachain is truly on the ground, connecting each independent chain through a slot will help achieve data synchronization, asset communication, and interoperability within the ecosystem. We can also connect to other public chains through the transfer bridge to break the problem of data islands.
Through the cross-chain agreement, we can achieve a high degree of freedom of business combination of any chain and the Substrate framework based on the expandable non-fork, which will bring great innovation space for ecological developers.
On Polkadot, developers can build the blockchain they want based on the Substate framework to achieve chain-level innovation. However, the development difficulty and cost of writing a chain are too high, and with the method of contract, the deployment difficulty and operating cost are very low, and the composability of different business scenarios can also be obtained. So this requires us the role of Patract.
As the Wasm contract technology provider in Polkadot ecology, we are also building a bridge for developers to connect contract applications. On Polkadot, although developers can use Substate to build the blockchain they want to achieve chain-level innovation.
Ethereum is the first blockchain project to realize the smart contract function. In 5 years, the Ethereum ecosystem has prospered, and the development tools, wallets, browsers and various tool services are complete. The underlying facilities and tools of Polkadot have yet to be improved. Our current development progress has been completed by 1/3. It is believed that it will be shorter than the development cycle of Ethereum, preparing for the explosive period of Polkadot contract application layer.
5. What are the risks and opportunities of slot auctions?
Vernacular Blockchain Sanli: The battle for the "head slot" in the Polkadot Parachain slot auction is currently eye-catching. What do you think is the benefit of getting the "head slot"? What do you think are the risks and opportunities of slot auctions?
Parity Helena: Polkadot's card slot auction is also one of the most important things in the community in the past few months, so whoever gets the head slot must have a great PR effect.
However, I have always emphasized with the project parties in the Polka Ecosystem whether to participate in the card slot auction, when to participate, whether it is on Kusama or Polkadot, these details are to return to the project itself and the business itself. According to their business conditions and their own preparations, each project party does not need to blindly fight for the "head slot".
First of all, the price and performance of the first batch of card slots are unknown, which is a risk point. In addition, as time goes by, a large number of card slots will be released, and the price and performance will be optimized a lot at that time. So I believe that the project team can make the best card slot choice for their project.
Vernacular Blockchain Sanli: For now, with the development and maturity of blockchain technology, more and more blockchain projects have chosen a cross-chain approach to solve the congestion problem, but we know very well There are still many problems before large-scale daily use and promotion. Which point do you think is the most hindrance?
PatractSantry: Strictly speaking, cross-chain is not to solve the problem of block congestion. Cross-chain is to solve the bridge connecting from each independent and scattered block island, and data communication and asset exchange can be carried out between each other. , To realize the real "Internet" of the blockchain.
At present, single chains like Ethereum still stay on the underlying structure of Pow+EVM, and the transmission speed is about 10TPS/sec. This is also the cause of block congestion. Polkadot uses Pos+Wasm in the underlying structure to achieve 1000TPS/sec. Polkadot itself is a multi-chain structure that can accommodate 100 parallel chains.
Then it means that there is a 100-fold improvement in performance. Of course, this piece is still at the theoretical level, and there are many difficulties to overcome. Because it supports 100 parachains, that means that each node needs to switch data and consensus information between multiple parachains, and the burden and complexity of the network will increase exponentially.
So at present, Polkadot has no problems with the cross-chain technology itself, and the reason that affects Polkadot's progress is still how to ensure shared security when connecting with the relay chain and the XCMP cross-message transmission link between multiple chains.
6. Compared with Ethereum Polkadot, what is the most anticipated?
Vernacular Blockchain Sanli: Currently, most of Polkadot's projects are based on the Substrate framework. Unlike Ethereum, which already has a stable and sufficient asset scale, why does the outside world expect the Polkadot ecology so much? Compared with Ethereum, what do you think is the most anticipated thing about Polkadot?
Parity Helena: I think when we consider this issue, we should not stand in comparison with Ethereum, but have to stand on a higher level and broader pattern to consider. We can think about what the future blockchain should have, and where can Polkadot empower the blockchain to grow to a greater level? Personally, I have always felt that if the blockchain is going to be out of the circle, it must have large applications that can be implemented, and it must integrate into mainstream Internet users.
Under such a consideration, the interconnection and interoperability of the underlying public chain, the high performance and stability of the system, and the speed and simplicity of the hair chain itself (no need to repeat the wheel) are very necessary. Obviously, Polkadot is advancing in this direction at these points, that is, things are developing in a reasonable direction.
Therefore, even if there is no significant asset lock-in on the Polkadot network, as early industry practitioners, as long as the direction is correct, it is worth our efforts to advance. From this perspective, the expectation for Polkadot's ecology is the expectation for the new pattern of blockchain.
Vernacular Blockchain Sanli: It is said that the auction of parachain slots will mean that the Polkadot ecology will begin to land. By providing a powerful underlying security system, Polkadot enables different blockchains with various functions to coexist and communicate in this network, providing the basis for the next generation of Internet Web3.0 information autonomy. Do you think the development of the Polkadot ecology will have any substantial impact on Ethereum, even the blockchain, and the Internet?
Patract Santry: First of all, we can see from the structure of Polkadot's heterogeneous multi-chain. Polkadot exists in the lower position of the technology stack as the base layer of Layer 0, while Ethereum is in the conceptual layer of Layer 1, and Polkadot Like the parachain, we can continue to build the contract application layer Layer2 on Layer1.
It can be said that we can build an Ethereum on Polkadot, but it is difficult to build a Polkadot from Ethereum. We can use Substrate to build Ethereum. In itself, the Polkadot ecology includes a single Ethereum chain, and each parachain can carry millions of applications.
The application on the Ethereum single chain not only faces the problem of high handling fees, but also insufficient block congestion performance. As the ecological development matures, Polkadot is likely to become the next generation of Ethereum technology platform for decentralized applications .
Gavin Wood proposed the concept of Web3.0 in 2014, and for this reason he also established the Web3 Foundation, aiming to break the Internet centralization problems of data control, privacy, trust, etc., and Polkadot, as a new generation of blockchain protocol, It is expected to become the basic technology of the next-generation blockchain network Web3.0.
Polkadot is composed of parachains, relay chains and transit bridges, which can realize the integration of the entire network of blockchains, allowing them to work and communicate seamlessly on a scale, and realize a decentralized and controlled by users the Internet.
Patract provides solutions for the development of parallel chains and DApps in Polkadot Wasm contract ecology. We help the community to design and develop on-chain contract modules and runtime support for the parachain, and provide DApp developers with full-stack tools and service support covering the stages of development, testing, debugging, deployment, monitoring, data provision, and front-end development.
